The Economic Affairs Division (EAD) has issued directives to the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) to accelerate construction work on Lot-1, Lot-2, and Lot-3 of the Dasu hydropower project, aiming for completion by the end of December 2025.
In a recent meeting chaired by Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Cheema, various stakeholders including the World Bank, ADB, and other agencies discussed the progress and challenges faced by foreign-funded projects. The focus was on addressing delays that hinder disbursements and prolong project timelines.
One of the key projects under scrutiny is the National Transmission Modernization Project -1 (NTMP-1) with a funding of $425 million. Delays in this project have led to concerns, with only a portion of the funds disbursed despite the agreement signed in 2018.
The discussion also highlighted issues related to the Islamabad West Station (IWS) contract award, where delays have been attributed to unresolved queries and procedural issues. The World Bank emphasized the importance of timely completion of IWS to avoid disruptions in power evacuation from the Dasu Hydropower Project.
Regarding the Dasu transmission line project, progress has been noted, especially in awarding contracts and addressing project bottlenecks. However, challenges remain in coordinating compensation payments to landowners affected by the project.
In response to these concerns, the EAD directed the Power Division and NTDC to expedite construction across all lots of the Dasu project and ensure timely compensation to landowners. The deadline for completing the project is set for December 2025, with a focus on meeting operational requirements well in advance to facilitate power evacuation efficiently.
